music in malaysia

Listening everyday to a Malaysian radio, is as irritatingly-repetitive as it is surprisingly-different.
I know its somewhat of a contradiction, but thats actually the perfect way to describe it.
From what i understood, by listening to the radio in my studio, every 3/4hours, the DJ changes in the radio, and then the new one plays whatever he/she pleases, not noticing if the previous DJ played it before.
So in Malaysia, and i dare to say – Asia, people have a tendency to hear music on “repeat 5”, meaning, there are always about 5 songs that go on and on and on… So the DJs on the radio, do the same thing. They play those 5 songs, every time they’re on air. So in hour 8hours in the studio, i get to hear at least 3 times those 5 songs, a day!
Next day.
Same 5 tracks.
Right now, the top 5 “to-repeat-songs” are:
Demi Lovato – Give Your Heart a Break
The Script – Hall of Fame
Selena Gonez – Love You Like a Love Song
Kelly Clarkson – Catch My Breath
Macklemore & Ryan Lewis – Thrift Shop
On and on and on….
But, of course there are more songs in the middle, which are kind of the same thing, but just get repeated 2 times a day, around 10 songs.
The cool thing though, the “surprisingly-different”, comes with the oldies. Oh yeah! Old pop hits are THE BOMB. Between Backstreet Boys, N’Sync, Whitney Houston, Celine Dion, Mariah Carrey, to name a few, its crazy how many times i get surprised by hearing these songs, that i hadn’t heard in years.
Or even a decade.

Dexys Midnight Runners – Come On Eileen
Mariah Carrey – Hero
Chumbawamba – I Get Knocked Down
Backstreet Boys – As Long As You Love Me
Daft Punk – One More Time
Coldplace – In My Place
Whitney Houston – I Wanna Dance With Somebody
Celine Dion – Because You Loved Me
Lighthouse Family – Ain’t no sunshine
Eagles – Hotel California
Fool’s Garden – Lemon Tree
N’Sync – Bye Bye Bye
I bet you are also thinking: WOW
Truth is, i actually love that they still play these songs.
And because they still play them, an amazing thing happened: Backstreet Boys came to KL last weekend!
Yup, BSB in KL.
I managed to check the free concert for about 40min, and it was c-razy! Like 15 years ago, there were lots of screaming teens “Brian marry meeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeiiiiiiii!!!!!”. Of course this just makes you laugh, cos if you think about it, the Backstreet Boys have been around for 20 years, and are now between ages 33 and 41!!! So its pretty funny to see these girls yelling at guys that are old enough to be they’re father.
Well, i had a blast, though my ears were in some kind of pain from the excited teens…
